What is the maximum number of pages for spiral binding?

The maximum number of pages depends on the capacity of the largest coil that can be used to bind the book and the thickness of the paper used for these pages. The largest binding coil diameter that can be easily obtained is 2 inches. This can accommodate a maximum page block thickness of approximately 1.75 inches.

Book pages usually use 50 # offset and 80 # glossy text, so let's use these two paper types to help us calculate the maximum number of pages. The thickness of these two papers is about 0.0038 inches. Therefore, a 1.75-inch page block will contain approximately 460 pages (1.75 inches divided by .0038 inches). Since each sheet counts as two pages, it is equivalent to 920 pages.

Even though technically the maximum number of pages for a 2-inch diameter coil is 920 pages, a book with so many pages would be very bulky and may be difficult to handle. Therefore, if you plan to print books with a high number of pages, it is best to discuss the most practical binding solution with the printer as soon as possible.
